The World's Biggest Teddy Bears' Picnic
McBear's blog By Jo Rothery on 29/06/2007

Hello, McBear here, with some very exciting news for some members of Jo's hug - they will be on their travels soon, to two events for bearlovers, both of them in really lovely surroundings.

Twenty of them will be heading for Herefordshire on Sunday, July 29, to try and help to set a new Guinness World Record. The occasion is the World's Biggest Teddy Bears' Picnic, at Eastnor Castle and Jo and the bears are hoping that we can encourage other 'serious' bear collectors to go along on the day.

Then Jo is hoping to go to the Exbury Teddy Festival, on Sunday, August 5, which will also be a great day out for all bear-lovers, from children to adult collector.

The teddy bears' picnic will be a magical family event on what organisers hope will be the sunniest day of the year, they are hoping tens of thousands of teddy bear lovers will join in the bid to break the world record at the lovely setting of Eastnor Castle (

Clothes for teddy bears
McBear's blog By Jo Rothery on 22/06/2007

I have received a letter from a nice lady called Val and I'm delighted that she is enjoying the website.

Her son's teddy (Telford Ted), aged 40, was repaired by Freda Neal recently and Val says that Freda did a magnificent job on a teddy who was in a terrible state. should show her "before and after" pictures on your website!

Val has difficulty finding clothes for teddy bears, so I wonder if any McBear visitors can help? She says she can never find any clothes for her own teddy (a small Chiltern, aged 67!) and that it would be lovely to be able to get them on the internet. He has one winter outfit and one summer one, and he is getting bored with them.

Knut the polar bear cub
McBear's blog By Jo Rothery on 18/06/2007

At last I've had time to read the July issue of Teddy Bear Scene and while there was so much to read that it did keep me pawing over the magazine for hours, I was totally fascinated by one piece of news - about Knut the polar bear.

Jenna, Jo and I were very upset when we heard how poor little Knut had been rejected by his mother - and we were even more appalled to hear that some people thought he should be put to sleep.

Thankfully Knut survived his tragic start in life and is now developing into a beautiful young polar bear, a really handsome fellow.

Robin Rive, that lovely bear artist from New Zealand, has often been inspired in the past to make bears to mark special events or personalities - and in Knut's case, a bearsonality. She has created a truly adorable fellow in lush off-white mohair, just the colour of a real polar bear.

Kosen have also made a charming Knut of their own, and no doubt Knut will ...

Teddy Bear Scene
McBear's blog By Jo Rothery on 17/06/2007

I have been kept so busy this weekend, with lots of people emailing me through the website, but now I'm going to relax and look at the July issue of Teddy Bear Scene, my favourite magazine - I've been itching to get my paws on it for days, but just couldn't find the time.

But before I dip into the July issue, did everyone see the fantastic World Exclusive story in the June issue?

That lovely editor, Kathy Martin, had the privilege of telling the world that the incredible Gyles Brandreth Collection of bears is going to be sold at Christie's auction rooms in London on September 19 - and the magazine has photos of some of the wonderful bruins that will be sold that day.

Tremendous excitement in the bear world about that auction - sad in many ways that the collection is being broken up, but an opportunity for lots of collectors to acquire a very special new friend. Wonder if any of them ...

Hundred Acre Wood
McBear's blog By Jo Rothery on 17/06/2007

Well, now I have the hang of this blogging thing, I just can't stop - especially as there is so much beary news around at the moment.

Good news, too! I know that all bear collectors are fans of Winnie the Pooh, so all of you will have been thrilled to hear that the real Hundred Acre Wood in Ashdown Forest, where Winnie, Tigger, Eeyore, Piglet and their friends played so happily, is to be preserved for future generations.

This is all thanks to a £2million grant from the National Lottery, which means that magical locations that everyone remembers from their childhood reading like the Enchanted Place and the honey tree, are to be restored.

The medieval woodlands and special habitats on the Weald Forest Ridge in East Sussex, which includes Ashdown Forest, is where A A Milne lived with his family, was the wonderful setting for his Winnie the Pooh stories. You can even see the bridge where the Po ...

Bear fair bonanza
McBear's blog By Jo Rothery on 13/05/2007

Well, this is it! The very first McBear blog - and I hope it is going to be the first of many as I am so excited about being able to share my views with the world of bears and bear-lovers.

I'm also hoping that lots and lots of collectors - and their bears - will be responding to my blogs, letting me know whether or not they share my opinions and suggesting lots of new issues that we should be considering in our global teddy community.

I'm writing this first blog at what is always one of the most thrilling times of the year - the time when there are lots and lots of bear fairs. And it is so encouraging to see that already the 2007 events seem to be really promising. It has seemed over the past couple of years that the bear world has been a bit 'flat', but reports about the shows at Llandudno, Pudsey, Portsmouth and the very exotic Great Bear fair in France which quite a few British artists attended indicate that this yea ...
